Sakura's Chess
A new chess puzzle every day: find the mate in two or three. Plus an endless practice ladder by rating.
Find the mate. Tap a piece, then where it goes, or drag it. Every move counts.
A free daily chess puzzle
Sakura's Chess has one new puzzle every day, the same for everyone, new at midnight UTC: a beginner-friendly checkmate in two or three moves. Find the moves that force mate; your opponent answers each one. The practice ladder is endless: it starts gentle and climbs with you, a step up for every puzzle you solve first time.
How to solve a mate puzzle
Look at every check first, then every capture, then the quiet moves that leave the king no square to run to. A mate in two means your second move is checkmate whatever your opponent does in between. Count the king's escape squares, and look for the move that takes away the last one.
Where the puzzles come from
Every puzzle comes from the Lichess puzzle database, released under CC0, and each was checked to have only one way to mate in time. The rules of chess on this page run on chess.js (BSD-2-Clause). There is no chess engine here: just the puzzle, the board and you.
