Green Room Spades is the classic partnership card game of Spades, for four: you and NARAE across the table against VESPER and TILT, SCATTER backstage after a show. It's free, it plays right here on a phone or a computer, and it keeps your game if you leave halfway. No account, nothing to download.

How to play Spades

Everyone gets thirteen cards, and before each hand every player bids a number of tricks to take. You and your partner add your bids together, and that's your side's target for the hand. Whoever sits on the dealer's left leads; everyone follows the suit led if possible, and a player out of that suit can play anything. Spades are trumps: the highest spade takes the trick, or if no spade was played, the highest card of the suit led. Spades can't be led until one has been played on a trick. Make your side's bid and you score ten for each trick bid and one for each extra trick, but every tenth extra trick (a bag) costs a hundred. Fall short and you lose ten for each trick bid. Bid Nil and you're promising to take no tricks at all: a hundred points if you manage it, a hundred off if you don't. The first side to 500 (or 250 in a quick game) wins, and a side that sinks to −200 (−100 in a quick game) is out.

Who you're playing

NARAE is your partner: warm and steady, bids a touch under, never goes Nil, and when you go Nil, plays high to keep you safe. VESPER bids exactly what the hand is worth and hates taking extra tricks. TILT bids big, goes Nil when the hand looks low, and once the bid is safe, comes after yours.

Tips

Count your sure tricks: aces, kings with a small card beside each, and your high spades; long spades win tricks late in the hand, and a short side suit lets a small spade trump. When your side's bid is made, duck extra tricks if you can, unless taking a few more will stop the other side making theirs. And if your partner bids Nil, lead high and play over the Nil.
